Might we never become so complacent that we consider mark making as simple and uninteresting.
The start making things and thinking about how it happens that we actually imagine a thing and then by the grace of God the piece, the image gets made.
When we first enter into the art making process and we actually make something it is as though we are walking through the looking glass. Going to museums and galleries we see , and sometimes more clearer and sometimes for the first time, that other people have walked and looked through the glass too. Naive as this sounds I would hope for maintaining keeping the freshness the openness of new ideas and possibilities ever more open.
There is a myth of knowing-ness. The myth is that the authority comes with age and experience. This is true in some things. I am a better driver now in my late 40's than I was in my teens. I drive more. I am a better draftsman than I was when I was in college and graduate school because I just know more about the tools of drawing and I have more practice.
Driving and drawing gets better with practice but I don't know more about my car and I know even less about markmaking the deeper I move into my art practice. Drawing, sculpture and driving are similar only when we approach the art practice as though we were traveling the highway of knowing-ness.
We must travel on new roads create new adventures for ourselves to stay fresh, to continue to broaden the range of possibilities.
