How To Be a Poet
(to remind myself)

 

Make a place to sit down.
Sit down. Be quiet.
You must depend upon
affection, reading, knowledge,
skill — more of each
than you have — inspiration,
work, growing older, patience,
for patience joins time
to eternity. Any readers
who like your work,
doubt their judgment.

 

Breathe with unconditional breath
the unconditioned air.
Shun electric wire.
Communicate slowly. Live
a three-dimensioned life;
stay away from screens.
Stay away from anything
that obscures the place it is in.
There are no unsacred places;
There are only sacred places
And desecrated places.

Jasper De Beijer

 Where would I be if I simply looked at these images and allowed them to be outside of what is possible . This work has an interior quality and life to it that is very remarkable. The layered textured surface of the paper is far from reflective in application and is as aggressive as it is methodical and tender.

 

 Jasper De Beijer's images are so fascinating to me--- they are rich and layered. De Beijer makes small paper, plaster and wire models and photographs them. These are stunning images. They walk the line between the artists hand and application of  technology. Looking at them I found myself moving between the real-- understanding the made-ness of the image and the super-real-- grasping at the  other worldly quality of the image. The texture of the images is so fabulous-- the paper, the crafted surface -- there is much more about Jasper De Beijers work to uncover . Very interesting --- and a huge treat to see.

Days of Awe: Speaking of Faith

 Listening to this podcast from Speaking of Faith about the Jewish high holidays  of Yom Kippur and Rosh Ha-shana  is  what we all should  do --- or may I should do --- and I have several times over. Much resonates  about what is said in this podcast --- How we are not in control --- how we are part of  a world that is part of us and at the same time knits us together through our actions , through our collective beliefs. Very inspiring and very worth taking to the time to not only listen  but hear.
