It was an experience of "...oh...really..." as we, my boyfriend and I , walked through the galleries of the Denver Art Museum . We had gone to see the show In Contemporary Rhythm:The Art of Ernest L.Blumenschein at the Denver Art Museum through February 8. The paintings are beautifully crafted, with an energy and spirit within them that made us both revisit what we love about paint, the human spirit both depicted and within the medium itself. It was a truly a treat to see--- really see how one artist experienced the landscape, the culture and the people of New Mexico. Blumenschien's paintings are not just about painting , or the idea , or the showmanship that can happen with art making --- there's a kind of worker, laborer with in his approach to painting --- the paint , the brushes are the tools by which he told his narrative. I have been so struck by his facility, his confident manufacturing of the image. There where many small studies in the exhibit as well. Two of which were of Isadora Duncan--- so beautifully loose and flowing these depictions of the dancer where that this morning I tried some small wash studies myself --- we are always learning --- always discovering --- how wonderful.Blumenschein's work has depth , a tremendous understanding on composition and color. This is very much a show worth taking the time to see --- and go see again.
