What happens in a day? I wonder about that too sometimes. At times its a blur and I am glad to have made through the marathon and sometimes its slow and sweeping and deliberate. As we start back to school, the first day was yesterday, I think about all of the hours we spend in meetings . Today was very productive and interesting .
In the morning we received very basic training on bullying in schools. We learned how to access the children that are the passive victims, the provocative victims and there is a new category out there , the victim-bully. The passive victim as you can imagine from the title is the child whom is quiet, and continues to take the abuse from the bully; the provocative victim is the child in the classroom with very little social skills, often times impulsive , ADHD, and is in the line of attack from the bully ; the bully-victim is a child whom is alternately victimized and the bully and more often the victim. This is important knowledge and skill set for teachers. It is personal for all and brings on discussions of Columbine as well as individual incidents.
In the afternoon session the teachers were trained in the final steps of PBS( Positive Behavior System). PBS is an incentive based behavior system designed to modify then eventually change the school, student and teacher collective culture. We started PBS at the end of last year . Now we are moving the PBS program into all areas of the school. I was glad when we decided to adopt a PBS approach. I felt we needed some structure for managing behavior that was consistent, clear and common among the staff . We have developed a language around respect , responsibility , learning and kindness that is clear and manageable for the students to understand and the teachers to implement . I am excited to see where all of this will take us in the coming year .
